Welcome to Opatija – The Pearl of the Adriatic
Nestled on the picturesque Adriatic coast, Opatija is a charming seaside town located in the western part of Croatia, at the foot of the Učka mountain. Known for its elegant Austro-Hungarian architecture, lush parks, and scenic seaside promenades, Opatija has been a popular resort town for over a century.

Its strategic location makes it exceptionally accessible. Opatija is just 40 minutes from Rijeka Airport and approximately two hours' drive from major international airports in Zagreb, Ljubljana (Slovenia), and Trieste (Italy). The town is well connected by road, offering smooth access for visitors traveling from across Europe.
Opatija lies within easy reach of several iconic cities in the region: Venice (Italy) is only 2.5 hours away by car, Ljubljana (Slovenia) just 1.5 hours, and Zagreb, Croatia's capital, around 2 hours. This proximity to well-known cultural and economic hubs adds to Opatija's appeal as a convenient and inspiring location for international events.

🏦 Currency
Croatia uses the Euro (EUR, €) as its official currency. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted, but it's good to carry some cash for small purchases, especially in rural areas or on islands.
🩺 Health Insurance
EU/EEA travelers should bring their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which grants access to necessary medical care. Non-EU visitors should have travel insurance that covers medical treatment and possible repatriation. Pharmacies are well-stocked and medical care is generally of high quality.
🔒 Safety
Croatia is considered a very safe country for tourists. Normal precautions apply: keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded tourist areas. The emergency number is 112 (for police, ambulance, and fire services).
📱 Connectivity
EU visitors can use their mobile data and calls under the "Roam like at home" rule. Free Wi-Fi is commonly available in cafes, restaurants, hotels, and public areas.
🛂 Entry Requirements
EU/EEA citizens can enter with an ID card. Visitors from other countries may need a Schengen visa, as Croatia is now part of the Schengen Area. Passports must be valid for at least 3 months after the planned date of departure from the Schengen zone.
🚗 Transportation
Roads are in excellent condition, especially highways (which are toll roads). Renting a car is popular for exploring the coast and islands. Public transportation (buses, ferries) is reliable and covers most tourist areas.
☀️ Weather and Best Time to Visit
The coast has a Mediterranean climate (hot summers, mild winters), while the interior is continental. In October, the average air temperature in Opatija is around 15°C (59°F), and the weather is generally mild with occasional rain and partly cloudy skies.
✨ Bonus Tips :)
1. Respect Siesta Time
In smaller towns, shops and businesses may close for a few hours in the early afternoon, especially in summer. It's a great time to relax like the locals.
2. Tap Water is Safe
Tap water in Croatia is clean and safe to drink, even in rural areas.
3. Tipping Etiquette
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving 5–10% is common.
4. Public Smoking
Smoking is still relatively common, especially in outdoor cafes. However, indoor smoking is banned in most public spaces.
5. Learn a Few Words in Croatian
Locals appreciate the effort! A few basics:
- Dobar dan – Good day
- Hvala – Thank you
- Molim – Please / You're welcome
